Coyotes are well-established throughout South Florida, including urban and suburban areas of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Highly adaptable, they use canals, green spaces, and undeveloped land to travel and find food, allowing them to live close to people without being easily seen. Coyotes are opportunistic feeders that primarily eat rodents, rabbits, insects, fruit, and carrion, but they may also be attracted to unsecured garbage or unattended pet food. They are most active at dawn, dusk, and nighttime and typically avoid humans; however, they can pose a risk to small pets if left outdoors. When coyotes become a persistent nuisance or safety concern, legal trapping or hunting conducted with landowner permission and in compliance with Florida regulations can be an effective solution, especially when combined with removing attractants and improving property security to prevent future conflicts.
